I was recently given the responsibility of designing a new logo for Memorial Baptist Church in Gettysburg, PA. It was officially unveiled this past weekend during a “Vision Sunday” service.
Designing a logo can be a daunting task. One has to try and capture the mission and essence of an organization in a single, simple graphic that will be used to represent said organization for (hopefully) years to come – no pressure, right?
And this wasn’t just a task to be completed and handed-off, never to be thought of again. MBC is my home church, where I worship, work and minister, so this was incredibly personal.
When all was said and done, the above logo is what we ended up with (along with a few variants to be used as necessary). Here’s a brief description of what it represents:
The steeple in the center is a rendering of our own steeple. It constantly points heavenward, reminding us of our purpose as believers – to do all for the the glory of God, and to point others to Him. The letters “MBC” are each part of the next, symbolizing the unity we should experience as a local body of believers. The three dashes on the left remind us that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. As a design element, it is intended to tie this logo to the MBCYOUTH logo that is already in use.
It was a privilege to be entrusted with this project, and I pray that it serves its purpose well!
